Fundraising Success at the UMV

During the month of February, The United Methodist Village raised money for the Ronald McDonald House. Residents made things to sell and employees at each campus had a friendly competition to see who could raise the most. The employees rallied their efforts & sold food, chances on gift baskets, gift cards, and so much more. In total both campuses raised

$ 4 , 5 6 9 . 5 5

for the Evansville Ronald McDonald House! We are so very proud of our residents & employees for raising this money for such a good cause. It's the most we've ever raised for a charity at one given time!

While each campus were both winners in the eyes of the people that benefit from the Ronald McDonald House, we decided as a "reward" with our friendly competition that the facility who raised the least would get to choose someone to kiss a live pig. So we got a real pig from a local farm & everyone at the North Campus got to vote (by donations) who would get to kiss the pig. We had lots of fun raising the money & at the ceremony where we got to present the BIG check to Kathy Scheller from the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks to everyone who participated & donated!

A Day in the Life of North Campus Environmental Services

My name is Bryan Stockinger and I am the Director of Housekeeping and Laundry Services for The United Methodist Village/North Campus. Our housekeeping staff has a combined service of over 30 years experience and consists of Connie Harvey, Sarah Jennings, Shanda Kasinger, Heather Buchanan, Shane Hall and Amber Meyer.

North Campus housekeeping services are available 7 days a week, and on a typical day we will have 3-4 housekeepers on duty. Daily cleaning schedules will include all of the resident rooms and the many public or “common” areas throughout our building. Housekeeping duties include: cleaning restrooms, vacuuming carpets, sweeping, wet mopping floors, dusting, restocking paper products, emptying trash and the general overall cleaning of areas in our facility.

Each housekeeper establishes their own system of cleaning, so they can work at an organized pace and complete their work on time. In addition to their everyday cleaning assignments, housekeeping is often asked to assist with room changes, admissions, discharges and be available to help residents and other staff in any way they can.

Throughout the years, our housekeeping practices have improved with the addition of better cleaning products, education and updated procedures to help our staff maintain a clean and sanitary environment for our residents, visitors and staff. The best word to describe our housekeeping staff is “teamwork”. Each day is a brand new day with challenges and changes that must be adapted to, our housekeeping staff is a perfect example of a team that pulls together when needed to. I am proud to have such a great housekeeping staff, the results of their hard work and dedication can be heard from residents, visitors and guest on how fresh smelling and clean our facility is.

Wilma Kennedy

Wilma Kennedy & her husband, Kenneth Kennedy, built a Cottage on our Independent Living Campus (called Southern Meadows Estates) in 1988. Wilma was a 4th grade school teacher most of her life. After retirement, they moved here from a town 50 miles south of St. Louis. They heard about The United Methodist Village through their church. She & her husband were active members in the Holden Center Chapel Choir. We have selected a group choir picture below from 1993 that show Wilma & her husband. Wilma has kept her choir shirt all the years & still has it today (pictured left). Wilma says, “Blue is my favorite color & I’ve always loved this shirt. It reminds me of the good days singing in the choir. I took very good care of the shirt.”

As many of you read in our previous newsletter, The United Methodist Village has decided to close its oldest building & piece of history, Holden Center. We thought that over the next few newsletters we would include some historical facts, pictures, & memories to honor & commemorate our history & share our hopes for the future.

Currently, at The Village we have eleven residents who used to live on Holden Center & one that was in the Chapel Choir on Holden (pictured on page 2). Some live at our Main Campus & others live on North Campus. Our longest resident that used to live on Holden has been here for 43 years! We are very fortunate to have such wonderful residents!

Birthday Celebrations at The Village

Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday Dear…those are you the words you sometimes hear while walking the halls of the United Methodist Village-North Campus. Each of our Residents are special, but on their birthdays the Activity Staff try to make them feel just a little more special than on a regular day. We like to greet the Birthday Person with a helium filled balloon, a big smile and a chorus of the Happy Birthday Song. We offer to tie the balloon to their wheelchair or walker, that way everyone knows it’s their special day and can greet them appropriately throughout the day. For those that don’t want the extra attention, we simply tie it to their bed or chair and let them enjoy it in the privacy of their room.

Most everyone loves a good party and at the North Campus, the Activity Staff loves to throw a good party. On the last Friday of each month, we have a birthday party in the activity room to recognize everyone who had a birthday that month. Each Birthday Gal or Guy is recognized and we have cake or home-made cookies donated by local churches, punch and lots of laughter. We reminiscence about past birthdays and just enjoy the special time of socializing together.

At each campus we had a Valentine King & Queen competition. Residents at North Campus were selected by their peers and then staff voted for them. (pictured left) Doc was so excited that he won the title of King, he was kissing all the ladies!

2011 Employee of the Month, Employee of the Year, & Service Awards

The staff came together for a ceremony to celebrate all of the winners of Employee of the Month from 2011 & to announce the 2011 Employee of the Year. They also gathered to honor those who are celebrating 30, 20, 15, 10, & 5 Years working at The United Methodist Village.

To gain the honor of Employee of the Month, employees must be nominated by their Directors. The nominees are then voted on by their peers at the last payday of the month. Winners of Employee of the Month receive a gift card as well as recognition on the company website, blog, & newsletter. Employee of the Year is also voted on by their peers & receives a large gift basket full of a variety of goodies. Service Award Employees get to choose a gift based on the number of years they have worked for the Village. See below the pictures from the ceremony.

Illinois State Representative Roger Eddy Visits the United Methodist Village

We were excited when Illinois State Representative Roger Eddy called our Marketing Director, Jamie Tussey to schedule a tour of our facilities. "I like to get out and see the residents of my district & the different facilities that are affected by the bills we pass," says Eddy.

While here we took Rep Eddy on a tour of our three campuses: UMV Main Campus, UMV North Campus, & Southern Meadows Estates where he stopped and talked to numerous residents & employees. Rep Eddy asked many questions on Medicare, Medicaid, the new State Bed Tax, and how these things are affecting The United Methodist Village. "I am very impressed with your facility & the amount of services you can offer to seniors. Places like this are much needed in rural Illinois," commented Eddy.

The End of an Era

The Methodist 'Old Folks Home' being built in 1926

The United Methodist Village (UMV) Board of Directors & Administration have announced the closing of Holden Center, the third location of the ‘Methodist Old Folks Home’ after nearly 86 years.

“It is with heavy hearts that we’ve made this decision. It has not been made lightly, nor without tears,” said Carol Brown, Administrator of the UMV-Main Campus.

The face of long term care has changed dramatically since The Village’s humble beginnings in 1908. As the government has become increasingly involved in the regulation of long term care, more and more changes have been forced upon the industry. After a small fire on the third floor of Holden Center in 2004, residents were moved off the third floor while the residents on the remaining floors stayed. In 2005, because of added government mandates, it was clear that the remaining residents would also no longer be able to stay. Holden Center was then assigned to be used for administrative offices & storage.

Significant changes are occurring in the healthcare industry. For the Village, the cuts in reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid continued and the costs of operating Holden Center increased. Administration again faced another decision on the future of The Village. The needs of their residents were placed above all else; which has always been the top priority of Village Administration. The decision to close Holden Center was made.

“We want to dispel any rumors & we want to ensure everyone that Holden Center is not condemned nor are we, in fact, closing the entire United Methodist Village,” said Jamie Tussey, Marketing Director for the UMV. “The Village will continue to give excellent care to our residents as it has the last 103 years.”

Since its inception, the Village has been motivated by a guiding spirit of compassion and Christian concern for the whole person: mind, body, & spirit. The Village encourages everyone to continue to pray for the UMV Board of Directors & Administration as they move forward in making decisions that will shape the future of The Village; a significant piece of Lawrence County’s history.

Our History: The Village began its ministry as the “Old Folks Home” in Smithboro, Illinois, in 1908. In 1915, the building burned and the residents moved to rented quarters at Greenville, then, later to Litchfield and Lebanon. In 1918, the residents were moved to a home in St. Francisville where it continued until 1926, at which time a three-story building was completed in Lawrenceville on a five-acre tract of land donated by the Lawrenceville Chamber of Commerce. Wings were added to the building in 1953, and the building, including the wings, is now known as Holden Center. Because of the pressing need for nursing care, Wesley Center was built in 1967, and Dycus Center in 1974. A 28-bed Alzheimer Unit was completed in 1990. In 1991, the Village Playhouse was opened to assist employees and the community with daycare needs.

In order to meet the demand for Independent Living, the Village has built or acquired a number of apartments, cottages and houses called Southern Meadows. In 1994, the Village added McKiou Center (now called Southern Meadows Estates), an independent living apartment complex.

In June 2010, the Village decided to convert a wing at the North Campus to Assisted Living.

Most recently in 2011, the Village is converting a wing at their Main Campus to accommodate residents with memory loss, dementia, & Alzheimer’s.

2011 ended with a month full of activities and special events. Lots of groups were here to sing and share their talents. Several groups just came to carol. The residents really enjoyed the school kids that came to sing Christmas songs.

The residents enjoyed a Christmas Luncheon. Activity staff served them and the residents helped plan the meal. The president of the UMV Board Gene Ramsey was present for this event.

Santa arrived and passed gifts out to the residents. Gifts were provided by the UMV Auxiliary. The American Legion brought gifts for the Veterans.

We plan to make 2012 an awesome year at the Village!

A Christmas Story

With visions of winning and bragging rights for the year to come

All departments were working hard,

With tiny wreaths that needed to be glued and hung.

With gumdrops, M&M’s, and all kinds of candy to be put on,

All in secret to show no one.

Secrets and whispers as you go by, secret door knocks and passwords

As you try to enter the door.

As the day came to reveal the winner of the Gingerbread Art and so much more

Would it be Nursing’s Castle, Therapy’s Cottage, Front Office staff Log Cabin, Housekeepers/Laundry’s Choo Choo Train or Activity Dept’s Sleigh,

All thought they would win, and everyone with the look of a job well done and a smile of a winner.

As the judges came in looking, whispering and pointing, everyone’s heart was a twitter.

Came to find out that yet again the front office staff came out as the winners.

All vowed that next year will be the year, and the Front Office staff shouted as they drove out of sight, “Merry Christmas to all. We still have bragging rights.”

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Like the song says, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” and it was.

We had the resident’s Christmas party on December 23rd. That morning, Santa came to see everyone and brought them a gift. We had residents lining up just to sit on his lap. Inez told him that his lap was just the right size for her to sit on. While Santa was down the halls, passing out more presents, the staff and residents in the parlor sang Christmas songs.

The parlor looked so beautiful with all the decorations then listening to the songs that was coming from the parlor put sparkles in the resident’s eyes. We had a resident play her harmonica for everyone. We all clapped and sang along with her. One resident said that Santa must be rich to get all of the presents; he told her that it was the spirit of Christmas that makes him rich.

In the afternoon, the residents played reindeer games and had cookies and punch. There was not one cookie left to give to Santa. The residents said that Lauran in the kitchen did a wonderful job making them. Walking down the halls, you see the residents talking and showing each other what they had got, they had big smiles on their faces. I think about how just a bag full of gifts meant to the residents and that made my heart swell with pride, I left work that day thinking about how some people could learn a lot from these residents and I could not wait to get back here the next day!

Merry Christmas from Our Home to Yours!

Look at those faces! These are a few of our current residents here at The Village that make our holiday & season a bright one! Holidays can be a difficult time for seniors, especially those living in a nursing home. We realize that some of them would like to be closer to family & loved ones. Every employee here treats The Village as the resident’s home. In that same spirit, we here at The Village make sure we go above & beyond the call of duty to ensure that our residents feel the holiday spirit.

The Village Activity Departments at both Main & North Campus is a big part of creating the Holiday Spirit at The Village. During the month of December, the activity calendar is full of entertainment to get everyone in the Christmas frame-of-mind. For example, we take them Christmas shopping, we go out & see Christmas lights, make cookies, eggnog, & play reindeer games.

On each station, you will hear a variety of traditional Christmas music and residents and staff singing along as they go about their day. Carolers, from school children to church groups, continue the Holiday atmosphere as they walk the halls.

The residents enjoy making holiday crafts and decorations and cooking and baking traditional and creative holiday goodies.

The Village residents share the holiday spirit by creating unique Christmas cards and sending them to family members and even each other. If you come by for a visit, when you are walking through the halls you will hear the residents taking part in Holiday games, such as “Christmas Jingo” and reciting holiday trivia. We also have a ‘Village Store’ where residents can be found doing some of their Christmas shopping & buying that perfect gift for the family member or friend.

Finally for the main event – Santa and his elves deliver the gifts (pictured on page 2) that are so lovingly provided by the Ladies’ Auxiliary (see their story on page 9) and the generous donations of those who love and support all of us here at The Village.

We also have a grand time down at Southern Meadows for all of our Independent Living tenants. Tenants get to enjoy the same wonderful holiday themed activities, musical performances by a variety of groups, & take in the beautiful decorations we put up each year (pictured left)!

It's hard to forget it's Christmas time at The Village. We have many wonderful employees who work here & spread Christmas cheer! One such employee is Pam Toliver. Pam's (seen below) lovely face greeted me this morning as I came out of my office and I couldn't help but immediately giggle, "You look so cute!" Pam replied, "I have a different one for every day of December." Well, I for one, can't wait to see what she will have in store this month. There are many others in the building who wear headbands, holiday scrubs & t-shirts, jingle bells, and so much more to help bring the spirit of Christmas to The Village.

With this special time of the year, we here at The United Methodist Village have many activities for the residents to participate in. We also get a lot of groups and individuals who perform musical numbers for the residents. One of my favorite groups to listen to are the Hoosier Harmonizers. They sound like a barber shop quartet and usually are very entertaining to watch as well. In the video below, they are singing "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas."

Celebrating Veteran's Day 11-11-11

We here at The United Methodist Village love our residents & enjoy them every day. But we took time out today on Veteran's Day to say thanks to those of our residents who served in the military.

At the ceremony, we had the kids from our children's daycare (located within the Village. The daycare is called the Village Playhouse.) say the Pledge of Allegiance. Then the Future Farmer's of America from Red Hill High School came and demonstrated flag folding while reciting the reasons for each fold. Lastly, the Administrator of the United Methodist Village - Main Campus, Carol Brown, presented each veteran with a certificate while the kids from Red Hill gave them potted flowers decorated in flag memorabilia (please see more pictures below).

Future Farmer's of America from Red Hill High School put on a flag folding ceremony

Tremendous Accomplishment

Recently, one of our long-time residents, Inez, brought me a letter detailing that she had been an Eastern Star member for 50 years. The Eastern Star is the female counterpart to the Masons. It is the largest fraternal organization in the world that men and women can belong. The purposes of the organization are charitable, educational, fraternal and scientific.
Inez is very proud of this accomplishment and enjoys telling others about her years as a member. Inez proudly points out that she held the highest office of Worthy Matron for 15 years. Inez said that she enjoyed having suppers and meetings every month. And her chapter in Sumner used to cook for the Kiwanis Club weekly. In addition, Inez was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge and held the office of Noble Grand for many years there. The Rebekah Lodge is the female counterpart to the Odd fellows. Inez has greatly enjoyed her years and involvement in these organizations. Inez also wrote for the Sumner Press, Bridgeport Leader and the Lawrenceville Daily Record. She is a woman of great determination and accomplishment.

Pumpkin Contest at North Campus

We like to compete between the departments each year for special events. Not only does it help with moral, it gives the residents a chance to help egg it on. The front office staff somehow cheats and wins most of the time. The rest of the building has been planning to take them down. This month, we design pumpkins. There was a lot of bragging and name calling (not really, at least not to their faces.) Staff was working on their pumpkins behind locked doors, you had to have a secret knock, then a pass word and a special handshake to get into the office. We had state surveyors in the building so we asked them and our Assisted Living residents to judge for us. They put down which one they liked and sealed it in a paper bag, then stapled it, so no one could peak until it was time to announce the winners. The rest of the residents, staff and family members came through and picked out the ones they liked.

During All Staff Meeting, we opened the bag and announced the winner. The Nursing Dept won 1st place. I believe that Ed told them to vote for nursing or he was going to give all of them a dose of Miralix. Here is the pictures of all of the depts that participate.

The Activity Dept has only has one thing to say, "We’re going to get you our pretties.” Winners of the pumpkin contest. Nursing dept. The sign on the arrow says, “Hi. My name is Roscoe. I will be your nurse today.”

The Activity dept made a porcupine that says , “I having a bad hair day.” We had to use a drill for the holes, then the drill quit and we had to use a jumbo push pin. Julie and I had sore fingers.

made a lovely lady with a mop head and big eye lashes. She got herself a date for Saturday night.

The kitchen made a pumpkin that was very hungry. Hanging from its mouth are some fresh vegetables that the staff says is good for you. They also said to brush your teeth after every meal.

Its early morning, 6:30am to be exact, and there’s excitement in the air but you can also feel the anxiety of the giant task at hand. A total of four people were coming together to display 189 quilts for the imminent Quilt Show that day. This was their first attempt at putting on a quilt show, and little did they know that over 200 people would plan to attend the event.

“This has always been a dream of mine. It’s been eight years in the making,“ says Eunice Glasser Volunteer Services Director at The United Methodist Village who organized the quilt show.

The quilt show was held at Southern Meadows Estates, the United Methodist Village’s Independent Living Campus (Senior Rental Community), in Lawrenceville, IL.

Each quilt tells a story of long history, heartbreak, inspiration, & hope. "It's very emotional to see these quilts," Glasser says. "You walk through and feel like you have a window into someone else's world."

Rev. Steve Killion, of Bridgeport 1st United Methodist Church, brought a quilt to display that his Aunt Pearl had made. “My grandmother, Ruby, had a dream about this quilt. She sketched it out & colored it. Then my Aunt Pearl made it,” Killion said. The quilt was made in 1932 (pictured left). Ruby & Pearl were homesteaders in Colorado. They had eventually moved to California to find work. Once they were in California, years later, the Quilters Guild wanted to find the 100 Best Quilts prior to 1940. After considering 14,000 quilts, they picked two of his Aunt Pearl’s quilts who were the “master quilter” of the family. “The quilt has been in many books,” says Killion. “We think it’s a very interesting part of our family’s history.”

Another veteran quilter in the community, Mary Jo Caldwell, displayed four of her handmade quilts & a quilted bear (pictured left). “The bear was made from old quilts that belonged to my mother,” says Caldwell. The quilts had been stored away and were nearly missed once when her mother moved to an apartment. “After my mother passed away in 1989, each of her five grandchildren was given a bear as a reminder of her love & devotion to her family.”

The quilts were judged in several different categories including Most Original, Best Baby Quilt, Best in Show, Honorable Mention, Best Hand Stitched, Appliqué, Embroidery, Machine Stitched, Special Recognition, Oldest Quilt, & Miscellaneous. “We had a very difficult job,” says Kim Minett who was one of the judges at the event. Other judges included Carol Brown, Mary Beth Finley, & Peggy Cordes.

“The Quilt Show turned out to be such a great event & I want to thank all of the volunteers who helped, my assistants (Susy Scott & Troyya Curry), the judges, our Marketing Director (Jamie Tussey) for her ideas & inspiration, and Mary Jo Caldwell for her advice,” says Eunice. “I couldn’t have done it without any of them.”

The Quilt Show was planned to be an annual event. “I’m sure the quilter’s needles will be flying and the sewing machine pedals are to the floor this winter with everyone trying to complete their projects for next year,” says Jamie Tussey, Marketing Director of The United Methodist Village. “I know I, for one, can’t wait to see what next year’s Quilt Show has in store for us.” The Quilt Show will be the first Friday of every October. So mark your calendars for next year, it will be on Friday, Oct 5th from 10am-2pm at the same location, Southern Meadows Estates.

Life here at the United Methodist Village North Campus is just not doing things in the facility, it is about getting oaut and doing things outside the facility. When we ask new residents if they would like to go on a trip with us, you can see the surprise on their faces. "You mean that we don't have to stay inside", they will ask.

We like to get out and explore the world. We have went to different places to eat, the Military Museum in Vincennes, the Museum in Mt Carmel, and the George Roger Clark Memorial in Vincennes. We go bowling in Vincennes, (I still think that Jill and Joe cheat). We went to Olney Lake for a picnic and boat rides. We go on joy rides to different parks, the pumpkin patch to get pumpkins and mums and we went to see the Christmas lights. We recently went to the Quilt show at Southern Meadows.

Here is Joyce at the Mt Carmel Museum. She enjoyed looking at the piano that was on displayed. She said that it needed to be tuned.

It was such a beautiful day to go boating at Olney Lake. Our Director of Nursing provided the boat rides around the lake. We has a picnic lunch under the shelter. The residents did not want to leave. Can you blame them?

Here we are at the Quilt Show. The ladies enjoyed it and talked about the quilts that they had made. We talked about making quilts on a machine now. The ladies all agreed that this was not quilting.

If you ever get a chance to go to the Military Museum in Vincennes, you need to go. It is so amazing to see all of the artifacts they have. The gentlemen that went talked about what they did in the war. They showed us some colthes that they wore. We are very proud of our Veterans.

If you see the paratransit or the van out, we are "On The Road Again", don't be offended if we don't wave, we are just having so much fun.

A Mad Scientist Comes to The Village

Residents at UMV-NC were amazed by scientific experiments shown to them by our special quest, Madd Scientist, (a.k.a. Activity Director, Brenda Hunt). Madd Scientist shared a variety of experiments which included an Oobleck, Spinning Colors, a Floating Paperclip, the String Pipe and Self-Inflating Balloons.

The favorite experiment was the Oobleck which is a combination of cornstarch and water. When mixed together it forms a liquid but also a solid. Residents took turns slapping their palms against the oobleck seeingthat it felt like a solid them sticking their finger into the mixture seeing it was a liquid.

Madd Scientist explained each experiment and the reaction it produced. The residents loved it when Mass Scientist had problems getting the experiment to work. They all had an enjoyable time laughing with each other while learning something new. Madd Scientist concluded his show by giving his signature evil laugh and had the residents joining in with him. Madd Scientist promised to come again next month and the residents are anxious for his return.

Summer Time Fun!!

Summer time is a fun time for the residents here at the Main Campus. Residents get to enjoy garden items that people generously donate. This summer we have had green beans, corn on the cob, tomatoes, watermelon and cantalope. The residents have snapped the beans and shucked corn, while doing so, we reminisced about summers gone by. Many memories were shared with others.

The residents also had the opportunity this past month to discuss, reminisce, smell, and arrange wildflowers we picked along the side of the roads. Everyone had a great time, except maybe the bugs.

Residents enjoy getting outside. This summer we have had trips to the park, joy rides, visits under the gazebo, and many good times just sitting out front.

Even though it has been super hot this summer, we were able to have picnics in the dining room. Checked table clothes adorned the tables with bugs of course, garden items were served by the activities department, and the residents got to help plan the menu.

These are just a few of the things we planned for the summer. Look for more to come.

Each year we have a Fall Fling that's held within the Village. We here at the Village work really hard at making sure our residents feel loved, safe & secure, taken care of, and entertained. This is, after all, their home. We try to live everyday with that thought at top of mind.

The United Methodist Village has an Annual Fall Fling. A Fall Fling is like an indoor fall festival inside the Village. We have many different vendors where the public, staff, or residents can purchase items, pick up things to eat, and enter raffles. It’s a fun activity for the residents. The little money we get from the vendors goes towards our Activity Dept that plans daily activities for our residents.

More on our Activity Dept: With a full-time activity director and support staff at both the Main Campus & North Campus, residents can participate in a wide variety of activities, including bus trips, bingo, exercises, and musical programs. Activities are designed for a range of abilities! If you choose, you can spend a quiet afternoon reading in your room or enjoy the fresh air in one of our courtyards. You might also browse the gift shop for that favorite snack!

We have, on average, 150-210 preplanned activities which translates into approximately 22-30 per week. One residents says, “If I went to all the things scheduled for me to do I’d have no time to comb my hair, take a shower, or even sleep!” In addition to our scheduled activities we have a library, Parlor, Gift Shop, a Beauty Salon, & Religious Services.

We need your help!We’re looking for people in the community who would like to participate & display their quilts for the quilt show.

We’re looking for all types: handmade, hand sewn, machine sewn, etc. Yourself, a family member, or friend could’ve made them. Please, no store bought quilts.

We’ll have soup & sandwiches to purchase during the event. All proceeds will go to the United Methodist Village Auxiliary that helps out the residents of The United Methodist Village.

We’ll be having prizes and rewarding the quilts in different categories such as: oldest quilt, most original, appliqué, embroidery, hand stitched, etc.

We would also love for there to be a story to go along with the quilt. If you could have something typed up that we could display with it or we can type it up for you.

Red Hill Dulcimer Society Performs

We have many daily, weekly, and monthly activities for our residents to enjoy. We have a lot of musical groups that volunteer to perform for our residents. When you watch the video you will see how much our residents enjoy it! We love to hear them sing along, clap their hands, & tap their foot to the beat!

This past week we were fortunate enough to have the Red Hill Dulcimer Society perform at The United Methodist Village. They played many songs that our residents recognized. A lot of them were singing along. They also took the time in-between songs to explain what dulcimers were & explain the origins of some of their songs. We have posted some videos below of them performing for our residents.

The Red Hill Dulcimer Society began in January 2006 with four mountain dulcimer players and one hammered dulcimer player. They now have over thirty members who play a variety of acoustic instruments including: guitar, penny whistle, bass, recorder, autoharp, bowed and plucked psaltery, mandolin and bodhran. They meet together almost every Thursday evening in the basement of the Sumner United Methodist Church. If you come by, you will hear the sounds of laughter, visiting, and of course music. They play everything from Hymns to Boogie Woogie and pride ourselves on having a whole lot of fun. If you are in the area on a Thursday night at 6:30, they welcome you to pick with us or just to listen!

The United Methodist Village is more than just another Long Term Care or Nursing Facility. I like to think of The Village as, well… a village. Just like any other village we have residents, friends, families and guests. Each member of our village plays a specific role and contributes their own unique skills, talents and knowledge. I believe it is our amazing ability to incorporate these contributions with our ability to work together as a team that makes our little village such a success.

Let me introduce you to just a small part of our village family… The Administrative Nursing Team.

We have Dana Hoskinson, Director of Nursing; Sue Finley, Quality Assurance Nurse; Connie Jo Griesemer, MDS Nurse/Coordinator; Stacey Zellars, MDS Nurse/Coordinator; Stephanie Baker, Restorative Nurse/Risk Management; Loretta Stevenson, Wound Prevention & Treatment Nurse; Loretta Lansbury, Administrative Nursing Secretary/CNA Supervisor; Gretchen Miner, Administrative Nursing Secretary/Lab Technician; and Lisa York, MDS Secretary.

Each member of our Administrative Nursing Team plays an important role in maintaining the highest level of quality of life for our residents. There is a long list of duties that each person is responsible for; some of these duties include:

Sue Finley monitors annual immunizations for residents and staff and performs safety and performance evaluations and inspections on vital equipment. Sue also assists with new employee orientations.

Connie Jo Griesmer and Stacey Zellars create care plans customized for each resident based on individual needs and requirements. They are also responsible for modifying these care plans as each resident’s needs change.

Stephanie Baker ensures that we maintain our restraint free status and pride. It is her responsibility to evaluate each resident and implement safety devices that will keep the residents safe while ensuring each resident maintains the highest level of independence.

Loretta Stevenson very carefully monitors and treats all of the facility’s wounds, from the smallest of scratches to post-surgical incisions. She takes every precaution to ensure these wounds remain free of infection.

Lisa York assists the MDS Coordinators in scheduling meetings for the care plans and compiling the care plan reports. On occasion, Lisa also assists with new admissions to the facility, so if you ever decide to tour the facility, you may have the opportunity to meet Lisa.

Loretta Lansbury spends countless hours preparing the CNA and Nurse’s schedules. The task of creating these schedules can be compared to working a difficult word puzzle. She has the responsibility of ensuring our facility has the appropriate number of staff required by law and still includes everyone’s days off and vacation requests.

Gretchen Miner not only schedules and obtains lab specimens but she also assists with tracking logs, compiling reports for meetings and assists with ensuring our policy and procedure manuals are compliant with state and federal laws.

As for me, Dana, it is my responsibility to connect the dots and tie each one of the administrative staff members together. I take the information they give me and use it to formulate plans and directions that will benefit other staff members, but most of all, that will benefit our residents.

It is the goal of The United Methodist Village and all of our staff members, from the Administrative Team to Activities to Housekeeping; that each one of our residents receives the care, love and support they deserve as well as provide a safe and friendly home-like atmosphere.

The UMV Partners with IECC Students

The United Methodist Village North Campus has partnered with Illinois Eastern Community Colleges to provide a clinical site to train those seeking a career in nursing. Students in the IECC Nursing and Certified Nursing Assistants programs make rotations through this setting to get hands on clinical experience. Here at The United Methodist Village North Campus our staff works very hard to provide a positive training environment for these students. Nursing and Nursing assistant students are welcomed here to work side by side with our highly motivated staff. Nursing assistants will be instructed in the day to day care of residents. They are shown the proper technique to transfer, assist with feeding, give proper hygiene along with many other activities of daily living our residents depend on. When the students arrive they are accompanied by an IECCC Registered Nurse instructor who is responsible to oversee there daily educational needs. They are paired with North Campus staff who gives hands on instruction and guidance. The staff of the United Methodist village North Campus takes great pride in this role. They understand that one day they may be working with the students they train and feel the need to insure they are as highly trained as our staff that remains behind to train the next class of up and coming health care workers.

It’s a fun competition for everyone & it helps beautify the courtyard of the North Campus for all residents to enjoy.

We Are The United Methodist Village

History

The Village began its ministry as the “Old Folks Home” in Smithboro, Illinois, in 1908. In 1915, the building burned and the residents moved to rented quarters at Greenville, then, later to Litchfield and Lebanon. In 1918, the residents were moved to a home in St. Francisville where it continued until 1926, at which time a three-story building was completed in Lawrenceville on a five-acre tract of land donated by the Lawrenceville Chamber of Commerce. Wings were added to the building in 1953, and the building, including the wings, is now known as Holden Center. Because of the pressing need for nursing care, Wesley Center was built in 1967, and Dycus Center in 1974. A 28-bed Alzheimer Unit was completed in 1990. In 1991, the Village Playhouse was opened to assist employees and the community with daycare needs.

In order to meet the demand for independent living, the Village has built or acquired a number of apartments, cottages and houses called Southern Meadows. In 1994, the Village added McKiou Center (now called Southern Meadows Estates), an independent living apartment complex.

The United Methodist Village purchased the Lawrenceville Manor, 2101 James Street, Lawrenceville, Illinois on March 1, 2004 and changed the name to The United Methodist Village North Campus in 2006. The North Campus is a 123 bed Skilled Nursing Facility. In the early part of 2009, the North Campus added a chapel to its south side for residents to be able to attend services.

In August 2009, the Village decided to convert a wing at the North Campus to Assisted Living.

Most recently in 2011, the Village is working on converting a wing at their Main Campus to accommodate more Alzheimer’s residents.

A Place to Worship: 2 Year Anniversary of The North Campus Chapel

The Chapel at the UMV North Campus

In 2004 when The United Methodist Village purchased “The Lawrenceville Manor”, now known as our North Campus, we knew that our residents needed a Chapel for worship. Plans were soon made to start fundraisers to realize that dream. With the dedication, support and wonderful response to the Chapel Fundraisers, we soon were able to begin the construction of the Chapel. With the consecration of the Chapel on September 13, 2009, we were now able to provide a beautiful place for our residents to worship and praise the Lord without interruption. Until the Chapel was opened, the residents held all worship services in the front Parlor across from the dining room. It was very difficult for our residents to pray and worship in the Parlor as the Parlor is an open area located next to a main hallway.

The Chapel has been a true blessing to our residents, residents’ families, staff and volunteers. It has provided a sacred place for worshipping, comfort and other activities. Our families and staff know that they have a quiet place where they can go to spend time in prayer and time with the Lord. This has only been made possible by the dedication and support of our Board of Directors, our Churches and generous Donors. For the next 100 years, The United Methodist Village Main and North Campus’ priority is to continue to provide spiritual nurturing, as well as professional nursing to everyone who chooses to call The Village “Home”.

Rehab-to-Home Program

At the United Methodist Village North Campus we promote the “Hurry Home Rehab” philosophy. Our rehab residents come from a variety of hospital settings and even from their own homes to receive the rehabilitation services we provide. Not only do we care for individuals discharging from our local hospitals, we receive referrals from as far away as Indiana University Medical Center and Terre Haute Regional in the north to St. Mary’s and Select Specialty Hospital in the south.

Our Hurry Home Rehab residents come with a multitude of acute care needs. Some of the conditions our residents are admitted with include cardiac disease, traumatic brain injuries, kidney disease, strokes, joint replacement and many more. We have had residents come to our facility to recover from automobile accidents, falls, recovery from major surgery or a severe case of the flu.

The Hurry Home Rehab program at the United Methodist Village North Campus provides an atmosphere conducive to rehabilitation through holistic healing, compassion and continuity of care. Our goal is to assist our residents step by step through their journey and the obstacles they face in order to return home quickly. To date in 2011 the average length of stay for our ‘hurry home rehab’ program is 29 days.

Our Hurry Home Rehab residents’ care is over seen by a highly experienced interdisciplinary team of professionals. Our Registered and Licensed nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, And Certified Nurse’s Assistants are highly trained in the rehabilitation process. A higher staffing ratio is provided to residents in the program to ensure they are given the individual attention they need to accomplish tasks and goals set by the resident and the team.

Some of the services provided include 24 hour skilled nursing care, skilled physical, occupational, and speech therapy. The Nursing team remains in close contact with our facility physicians regarding our resident change in condition and progress toward their goal of returning to the community. Medication teaching is done to ensure residents and their families are comfortable with any new medications prior to returning home. To ensure a smooth continuum of care once a resident is back at home, we arrange for follow up appointments and ensure transportation is scheduled for those appointments.

Lawrence County's Mother of the Year

We’re happy to report that the 2011 Mother of the Year for Lawrence County was Eula Maxine Miller. All those who know & love her call her Maxine. She will be turning 90 yrs old this June. She has 3 daughters, 8 grandkids, 13 great-grandkids, and 1 great-great-grandkid. Maxine will be going home after a short stay at The United Methodist Village, North Campus.

Best Advice: “Serve the Lord, Jesus Christ with all your heart”.

Proudest Moment: Her daughters, seeing their values, and how they have turned into the women they are today.

She taught her children to be honest and kind to others; traits they have passed down to their own kids. Maxine said, “My parents were very good examples for me and I knew I wanted to do the same for my kids as they grew up.” Her parents raised 5 girls and treated them each individually, not stair stepped.

“I let each of my daughters grow up to be their own person,” she said. One of her daughters thanked her for “letting me be me.”

Maxine ended with tears in her eyes, “I love each of them and I am very proud of them.”

Being a licensed ordained minister has many duties, including providing spiritual guidance, support, and encouragement. After 4 years of ministering at The Village, I have found that the Chaplain isn’t the only one who provides the care mentioned above.

The Village has many wonderful, caring staff members, from nursing to laundry. One Department that I feel goes above and beyond their daily duties is the Activity Department. The Activity staff daily passes out small devotions, holds a resident’s hand and says a prayer with them, laughing and sharing together. when the activity staff are performing activities with our residents they do so with joy and a big smile!

The nursing staff are another department that, not only passes medications, but gives a loving touch and whispers a prayer for one that is critically ill, providing the love that Paul speaks about in 1 Corinthians: 13.“Love is patient, love is kind, it always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

There are other staff members that give their time and love with a caring heart. Social Services, Dietary, Housekeeping, Laundry, Medical Records, Office staff, Maintenance, Beauty shop, Therapy Dept., Volunteer Services and our very own Childcare who give so much joy to everyone! Last but not least, you will find our Administrator standing beside the bedside of her residents who need that extra loving touch and giving them a smile that says, “I am there for you.”

We LOVE our Doctors!

The Doctors are a vital part of caring for our residents at The United Methodist Village. We have some of the most caring and compassionate Doctors to be found. Our residents are not just a number or a disease to our Doctors, they are living beings that are a part of a family. Our Doctors communicate openly with residents and families to keep continuity of care to meet the care plan that nursing has developed for each resident.

We all know there are times when the Doctors are overworked and have had very little sleep but are always congenial to answer the nurses questions and give orders for their patients. There are times when the nurses can’t pinpoint the problem and many times the Doctor has said “Ill just run over there and see what is wrong.”

Some have come late at night to help out. They go above and beyond to take good care of the residents; and they know the residents and their families by name.

The nursing staff along with the Doctors that service the UMV are one excellent team of Health Care providers that show heart in caring for our residents.

BBB Accredited Business

The United Methodist Village has now become a BBB Accredited business. The BBB contacted us because people were wanting to know about our business. So after going through the application process, we are now a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating. We have had no complaints lodged against us to the BBB, our length of time we have been established is sound (103 years), & the BBB has enough background information on us to give us the full accreditation! Senior Health Fairs

Have you been to a local Health Fair lately? If so, you probably saw our Marketing Director, Jamie Tussey, at our booth! We've been busy the last couple of months attending surrounding health & senior fairs. If you see Jamie, stop and ask her a question. We know she'll be able to help you out! Our next one isn't until Sept 15 at the Vincennes YMCA. Hopefully we'll see you there!

We always have a C.N.A. present at our booth to provide a health screening such as Blood Pressure Checks.

This is Alfred Powell. He is a resident here at the UMV North Campus. We have a “adopt-a-pot” program for our courtyard where residents & family can adopt-a-pot to plant flowers or veggies for an activity & to help beautify our home.

Alfred and his daughter, Sue, planted this tomato plant. He is holding his first ripe tomato! His son Dan came in and helped him eat the ripe ones.

For those of you who do not know me already, my name is Andy Blevins (pictured left at the Celebrity Chef Menu in Lawrence County). I have been working in the kitchen at The United Methodits Village - North Campus for almost 6 years now. I was recently promoted to the new Food Services Director at the North Campus.

It has been a very exciting first few weeks in my new role as manager. There will be a few changes coming in the future as far as our menu items are concerned but, basically we will continue to produce the best food that we can. With summer coming into season we will have a lot more varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables available to our residents. We will be having a western themed day coming up on June 28th, where we’ll be having cowboy style meals all day.

On the 4th of July we will be having a cookout for residents and staff with hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone.

As for the rest of the time we will continue our mission of serving the highest quality, restaurant style dining in the community. We believe that giving our residents as much of a variety in their dining choices is one of the most important factors in maintaining a better quality of care.

With each decision we allow our residents to make it gives them a little brighter outlook. As always if anyone has any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to contact me.

A Year in Reflection

A couple who lives in our Assisted Living

One Year Anniversary of the North Campus Assisted Living & Their New Administrator, Briana Crutchfield

Assisted Living is a key part of our mission of senior living at its best!

June 13th marked the 1 year anniversary of our Grand Opening to the Assisted Living (AL) facility at the North Campus. When the Village made the decision to add Assisted Living to our senior community, the goal was to bridge the gap between independent living and a skilled nursing facility. The desire was to do so while encouraging choice, independence, individuality and privacy for our assisted living residents. The residents on our assisted living unit are an active and vital part of our Village community! Several of the ladies enjoy welcoming new residents to the skilled nursing facility and visiting with old friends. They enjoy walking and you might see them outside for a stroll when the weather cooperates. They enjoy worship services in our Chapel and playing the piano in our Parlor. They are always up for some entertainment and socialization in our activities department. I sat down recently with several of the ladies who reside in our Assisted Living Apartments to get their input on how this first year has gone. Some of their comments as we talked included:

“It’s not home, but it’s absolutely the next best thing.”
“Living here is like being on vacation, it’s nice to order off the menu, I don’t have to cook, do dishes, or clean!”
“I’ve made many dear friends here at North Campus, and reconnected with others.”
“The decision to leave my home of over 50 years and come here was a hard one, but I did it for my family, it gives them peace of mind to know I am here and they do not worry about me living alone.”

On behalf of the staff at North Campus, we thank each of our AL residents for sharing in this journey and new chapter in Village history. We are so very fortunate that you have chosen North Campus as your new “Home”, and for allowing us to care for you!
